ROSEVILLE (KMHL) – A professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall claimed his $1 million dollar lottery prize this week at the Minnesota State Lottery office in Roseville.

John Engstrom purchased the Powerball ticket last month in Mankato. Engstrom, who lives in Mountain Lake, was Christmas shopping in Mankato in December when he purchased the ticket at a Kwik Trip.

According to a press release from the Minnesota State Lottery, Engstrom said it was a “fluke” that he even purchased the Powerball ticket on Dec. 18.

He was standing in line to buy some donuts when he noticed the Powerball jackpot sign and thought, “What the heck – I should buy a ticket.” He said that he put it in his coat pocket and “didn’t think twice about it.”

The single-line quick pick ticket matched the first five winning numbers drawn on the Dec. 18 drawing to win the $1 million prize. The numbers that night were 14-18-26-39-68, the Powerball number was 9.

Engstrom is the fifth Minnesotan to claim the $1 million dollar prize this year.
