Pawlenty Backs Off Of Cuts For MnSCU
Gov. Tim Pawlenty is backing off some cuts in his revised budget plan -- and relying on federal stimulus dollars even as he criticizes them. Pawlenty says he aims to reverse proposed cuts to universities and colleges, delay some health care cuts and send more money to courts and public schools. "There is a slight uptick in the K-12 Funding proposal that reflects the use of the federal money," said Pawlenty. "You will see a 304 million dollar increase in higher education, a restoration to current levels for both the University of Minnesota and MnSCU." The Republican governor is counting on $2.6 billion from the feds -- about $800 million more than his administration forecast two weeks ago. Democratic leaders have criticized Pawlenty's revised plan, saying it's not balanced. House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher... "We don't think this budget is balanced, we don't think its a responsible thing to do to dilude people that there can be more spending when we are in a 6.4-billion dollar hole," said Kelliher. Democrats say it would unfairly target health and human services with a deep cut starting in 2012.
